The purpose of organic cultivation is to provide safer and more secure rice and to contribute to the realization of an environmentally friendly society.

Century Harvest Rice: Taking on the Challenge of Organic Seedling Cultivation

In the past, we used to buy seedlings, but this year we started making organic seedlings from scratch with our own hands in order to responsibly manage the production of seedlings that do not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides. Since I had no experience in growing seedlings, I took on the challenge while learning from a senior farmer Mr./Ms. who was engaged in organic cultivation, and as a result, I was able to grow healthy and splendid seedlings.

The biggest enemy of organic farming is...

The biggest challenge in organic farming is weed control. Conventional cultivation methods use herbicides, while organic cultivation does not use chemicals. That's why you can harvest safe, secure and delicious rice. However, because Mr./Ms. does not use herbicides, weeds grow. Weeds are natural enemies of rice because they suck up water and soil nutrients.
In order to improve the efficiency of weeding, which is the biggest challenge and time-consuming, we have introduced a new high-performance weeding machine. Previously, a 1,000-square-meter rice field was weeded with a human-powered mower for four hours, but with the use of a new machine, the work time was reduced to just 40 minutes. In addition, it does not damage the rice seedlings and can efficiently remove only the surrounding weeds.

As a result, the time spent on weed control can now be used for tasks such as improving the quality of rice and managing its growth. Through trial and error, we are growing steadily so far.
