The Progress of KIMOTO Technology: Sandblasting vol.1
By applying some kind of processing to the surface of the film, it can be given various functions.
KIMOTO has developed various surface processing technologies to meet the needs of customers.
In this column, we will introduce one of the technologies that KIMOTO has cultivated, 'sandblasting'.
What is sandblasting?
Sandblasting is one of the methods for processing film.
Recently, the term "matte finish" is often used in cosmetics and other products. In English, "matte" means "non-glossy" or "dull finish."
When we talk about "matte skin," it refers to a calm, non-shiny complexion, and the same image applies in the world of film as well.
By adding fine irregularities to the smooth surface of the film, it becomes non-glossy, resulting in matte film.
So, how do we add these fine irregularities to the surface of the film?
There are various methods such as coating, etching, and kneading, but sandblasting is a physical processing technique.
"Sand" means "sand," but it also refers to a processing method where fine sand is actually blasted onto the surface to create texture. This is an environmentally friendly technique that does not use organic solvents.
By creating a textured surface, it becomes possible to add various functions.
Next time, we will discuss 'Why make it matte?' in vol.2.
